Capitolo 11 – Una nuova squadra!
Ci sono molte novita` nel progetto Kikora, nelle sue attivita` e nel suo staff….ecco gli aggiornamenti!

Il lavoro con le famiglie
Gli incontri con I genitori sono diventati scadenze mensili ( e non piu` quindicinali) e vogliono essere piu` partecipativi e pratici. In ogni incontro non ci saranno solo scambi di parole, pensieri, condivisioni e ricerca comune di soluzioni ma anche attivita` pratiche e di formazione che possano dare alle famiglie nuovi stimoli per reinventarsi il futuro.
Nei due mesi passati sono stati formati all’autoproduzione del sapone liquido che puo` essere venduto localmente e hanno iniziato un gruppo di risparmio per cui ogni membro contribuisce 50 ksh (equivalente a circa 0.5 euro) a settimana.
Nel frattempo continuano a lavorare le due mamme che producono rispettivamente gioielli in perline e borsette all’unicinetto. Fino ad ora questi accessori sono stati venduti principalmente in Italia ma ora vogliamo rilanciarli sul mercato locale per far in modo che queste diventino delle attivita` sostenibili e indipendenti dal progetto Kikora.
Mirisen, la mamma che produce collane e orecchini in perline, con I risparmi ottenuti durante quest’anno ha quasi finito di costruirsi una casa, sicura, bella e che finalmente ripari lei e tutti I bambini dalla pioggia!
Il 14 Ottobre abbiamo organizzato una giornata genitori e figli per i ragazzi che vivono al centro, come primo passo verso la loro reintegrazione in famiglia. I genitori sono venuti al centro, abbiamo discusso sui prossimi passi per la reintegrazione e abbiamo speso del tempo assieme giocando e condividendo un pasto, preparato tutti insieme! Una giornata bellissima!
I ragazzi
Per quanto riguarda i piccoli, dopo due mesi (Giugno e Luglio) di attivita` quotidiane con i ragazzi che vivono in strada, abbiamo accolto 6 nuovi ragazzi. Due sono gia` tornati a vivere con le loro famiglie dopo essere stati con noi poco piu` di due mesi, mentre gli altri 4 vivono ancora al centro Kikora e speriamo di poterli reintegrare presto! Da Settembre sono anche rientrati a scuola; i genitori hanno contribuito, in base alle loro possibilita`, ad acquistare le nuove uniformi e il Progetto Kikora ha coperto I costi dove la famiglia non riusciva ad arrivare. Un coinvolgimento della famiglia anche nella parte finanziaria fin da subito e` indispensabile per facilitare la reintegrazione familiare!
Tutti I giorni le attivita` di doposcuola procedono con un totale di 23 tra bambini e ragazzi. Alcuni di loro stanno ormai attraversando l’adolescenza e per questo abbiamo deciso di creare due gruppi divisi.
I ragazzi piu` grandicelli hanno un giorno a settimana a loro dedicato dove si affrontano vari temi di vita e si imparano abilita` importanti. Alcune lezioni di informatica sono previste per aiutare questi ragazzi ad inserirsi nel mondo della tecnologia.
I piu` piccoli invece attendono le attivita` regolari il Lunedi, Martedi e Giovedi.
Il venerdi` e` il giorno della settimana in cui I due gruppi e lo staff si incontrano insieme per le attivita` ricreative e di formazione Spirituale: senza imporre un particolare Credo su un altro cerchiamo di accompagnare I ragazzi nella crescita spirituale tramite la lettura di vari testi Sacri, discussioni, canzoni e incontri con vari leader spirituali. Crediamo che la dimensione Spirituale sia importante tanto quanto quelle psicologica, emotiva,cognitiva e fisica per un sano sviluppo sell’individuo; pertanto non poteva essere tralasciata nelle nostre attivita`.
Poi il Sabato per tutti si va a giocare a calcio allo stadio, creando l’occasione anche per altri ragazzi di strada di conoscere il progetto ed eventualmente di decidere di farne parte!
Lo staff
Da settembre il nostro staff si e` arricchito di due giovani figure, Atlanta e Chelimo, che ci hanno offerto il loro servizio di volontariato per alcuni mesi hanno ora la possibilita` di dedicarsi a Kikora a tempo pieno! Mentre Chelimo aiuta` Faiza nelle attivita` di doposcuola con I ragazzi; Atlanta si dedica completamente alla riabilitazione e reintegrazione dei ragazzi che vivono al centro. Nel frattempo Loise continua a seguire tutte le famiglie e a mobilitare la comunita`.
Continuiamo a essere in contatto con il St. Martin CSA di Nyahururu che constantemente ci aiuta a formare lo staff e a crescere come organizzazione. Ora stiamo preparando un training su come aiutare ragazzi e adulti a uscire dalle dipendenze, che sara` facilitato dal Community Programme for Addiction and HIV del St. Martin.

The work with the parents
The meetings with the parents are now happening monthly and not biweekly anymore) and they have a stronger practical and participatory approach. Every meeting will be not only for sharing ideas , common problems and solutions but also for learning practical skills that can push the parents to reinvent their future.
During the past three months parents have been trained in soap making to produce a liquid soap that can be sold in the local market and they decided to start a saving group among themselves where every member contributes 50Ksh ( about 0.5 euro) every week.
In the meanwhile the two mothers engaged respectively in the production of jewelry and crocheted bags are keeping on with their activities. These products so far have been sold mainly in Italy, however we are working towards creating a local market for them within Kenya so that their business can become more sustainable and independent from Kikora.
Mirisen, the mother who produces beaded jewelry, through the savings earned this year with this activity, is now able to build her new house, a nice and safe building that can protect her and her children from the rain!
On the 14th of October we had a parents/children event, as a first step towards reintegration of the children living at the centre. The parents (or guardians) came at the centre where we discussed the next steps towards reintegration and its possible challenges, we spent some nice time together playing and sharing a meal that had been prepared together. A very successful day!
The kids
Concerning the children, after conducting daily activities with the street children during the months of June and July, we’ve welcomed at our center 6 new boys who have started the rehabilitation process. Two of them have already been reintegrated with their family and we are doing follow ups, while the other 4 are still at the center and we aim to reintegrate them by the end of November.
From September they also went back to school; their parents contributed to purchase the uniform accordingly to their possibilities and Kikora has covered the remaining cost. Involving the family also in the financial aspect from the beginning is essential for a successful reintegration!
Afterschool activities involve a total of 23 children. Some of them are approaching adolescence and for this reason we have decided to organize them in two different groups.
The older kids have one day a week dedicated to them when we face different themes about life skills and we learn important abilities. Among others the kids are trained on how to use computers to help them get confident with technology.
The younger kids instead attend regular afterschool activities on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Friday is the day in which both groups and the staff come together for entertainment and spiritual formation: without imposing one religion on another, we try to accompany the children in their spiritual growth through readings of different books, discussion, songs and meeting with spiritual leaders. We believe that the spiritual dimension is as important as the physical, psychological, emotional and cognitive dimensions for ensuring a healthy development of the child; therefore we couldn’t miss to introduce this kind of formation in our activities.
Finally, Saturday is the day for playing football at the Stadium of the town, creating also a chance for other children who are still in the street of getting to know the Kikora project and hopefully deciding to join us!
The staff
From September our staff is enriched with two young people, Chelimo and Atlanta, who have offered their volunteer service for some months and now have the chance to help the project full time! While Chelimo helps Faiza in afterschool activities, Atlanta dedicates his time to the rehabilitation and reintegration of the children living in the centre and their families. In the meanwhile Loise works hard to follow up all the other families.
We also continue to be in touch with St. Martin CSA of Nyahururu that offers a constant support in the training of the staff and the development of our organization. Nowadays we are planning for a training to learn how to help adults and children to overcome the problem of addiction; the training will be held by the Community Programme for Addiction and HIV of St. Martin probably at the end of November.
